Mosquito-borne diseases are a significant concern in New Jersey, as they can lead to serious health complications and even death. Here is some additional information about the most common mosquito-borne diseases found in the state:

  • West Nile virus (WNV): This is the most frequently reported mosquito-borne disease in New Jersey. WNV is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people infected with WNV do not experience any symptoms, but some can develop fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, and a rash. In rare cases, WNV can lead to severe neurological illness or death.
  • Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE): This is a rare but serious disease that can be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms of EEE can include fever, headache, chills, vomiting, and seizures. In some cases, EEE can lead to permanent brain damage or death.
  • Zika virus: This is a viral disease that can be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito, as well as through sexual contact and from mother to child during pregnancy. Symptoms of Zika virus can include fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis. In pregnant women, Zika virus can cause serious birth defects.
  • Chikungunya: This is a viral disease that is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms of Chikungunya can include fever, joint pain, headache, muscle pain, and rash. In rare cases, Chikungunya can lead to chronic joint pain.
  • La Crosse virus: This is a viral disease that is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms of La Crosse virus can include fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting. In rare cases, La Crosse virus can lead to severe neurological illness.
  • Malaria: This is a serious and sometimes fatal disease that is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms of malaria can include fever, chills, headache, and flu-like illness. Malaria is not commonly found in New Jersey, but travelers to areas where the disease is prevalent can become infected.
  • Lyme disease: This is a tick-borne disease that is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick. Symptoms of Lyme disease can include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic bullseye rash. If left untreated, Lyme disease can lead to more serious health problems such as joint pain, heart palpitations, and facial paralysis.
