Hi, I’m Laurie — mom, wife, and co-founder of Bite Back Tick and Mosquito Control. Years before we became New Jersey’s trusted all-natural mosquito and tick service, we were simply parents trying to protect our kids, our dogs, and our yard from pests without exposing them to harsh chemicals.
What most people don’t know is that Bite Back exists today because of a formula created in our garage by our daughter, Lauren… when she was only 12 years old.
2011: A New Home, a Big Yard, and Way Too Many Bugs
Back in 2011, Ron and I moved our young family — sons Ron Jr. and Ryan, baby Lauren (born 2008), and our dog Riley — into our dream home in Manalapan, NJ. We pictured summer barbecues, barefoot kids running through the grass, and long nights catching fireflies.
Instead, we found ticks on the dog, bites on the kids, and mosquitoes swarming every time we stepped outside. My nightly routine became tick checks, citronella candles, and worrying about our little ones playing near the backyard stream.
Traditional pest companies told us they could only spray with harsh chemicals — and nowhere near our waterline. That was a deal-breaker. I refused to saturate our yard with neurotoxins just to enjoy being outside.
2020: The World Stopped, but Lauren Got to Work
Fast forward to spring 2020. While the world was in lockdown, the ticks and mosquitoes were very much alive. Lauren, now 12 and already a science lover, looked at me one day and said:
“Mom, I can make something that works — but won’t hurt the dogs, bees, butterflies, or the stream.”
So our garage turned into a little laboratory. Lauren researched cedarwood, lemongrass, peppermint, rosemary, and other essential oils, learning how they each affected ticks and mosquitoes. She mixed tiny test batches, adjusting ratios with the determination of a young scientist.
Ron became the official sprayer. The boys became “tick check assistants.” The dogs supervised (and occasionally knocked things over). And then something amazing happened…
Her formula worked. Really worked.
The ticks disappeared. The mosquitoes were gone. The yard smelled like a spa. And for the first time in years, we could let the kids play freely — without fear and without chemicals.
Our Backyard Breakthrough Becomes a New Jersey Movement
Word spread fast. Neighbors started asking what we were doing. Then friends of neighbors. Then entire cul-de-sacs. Ron mixed extra batches in the garage and spent weekends helping families reclaim their yards naturally.
By midsummer 2020, we had a name — Bite Back Tick & Mosquito Control — and a mission: keep families safe without harming the environment.
We bought our first truck, wrapped it with Lauren’s butterfly design (yes, she drew it!), and turned a garage experiment into a full-time, New Jersey-wide service specializing in EPA-exempt, all-natural, kid-safe, pet-safe products.
We remain a true family-run company — Laurie, Ron, Ron Jr., Ryan, Lauren (now 17 and still the science brain behind the formula), and a team that feels like family. No franchises. No shortcuts. No chemicals we wouldn’t use on our own kids or dogs.
